Honoring the Women of Wounded Knee ‘73 | April 25th 2024, baltimore md
The poster version of the "Honoring the Women of Wounded Knee" exhibit made it to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) with friends we made at the 2023 Oral History Association Conference. Jessica Burstrem, a Ph.D. student in Language, Literacy & Culture, presented the exhibit and facilitated the discussion.
Beth Castle, the director of the Warrior Women Project, joined students via Zoom for an engaging discussion about how community-based oral history archives can be activated to serve their home communities and inform present-day liberation struggles. This event highlighted the importance of oral history in understanding historical events and its role in contemporary movements for social justice and cultural preservation. The event also emphasized the significance of grassroots documentation and the power of storytelling in fostering community resilience and empowerment.
Events like this at UMBC help students and community members connect with the historical and ongoing struggles of Indigenous women, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their contributions to social justice movements.
