NANAI 50th Anniversary events
In October 2023, the ‘Honoring the Women of Wounded Knee’ exhibit made it’s European debut in the Netherlands with Marcella (Marcy) Gilbert and Ryia Lebeau to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NANAI (The Netherlands Association for North American Indians). Over ten days, WWP participated in events across the Netherlands to celebrate this milestone celebration.
NANAI was established in 1973 by Maria van Kintz, inspired by the Wounded Knee occupation. Maria, a member of KIVA (Dutch Union of Friends of Indians), founded NANAI to support and amplify the political struggles of Indigenous people. Her efforts included sending a Dutch television crew to document Wounded Knee and organizing international support for Indigenous rights.
The NANAI 50th anniversary highlighted enduring lessons from Wounded Knee, and the solidarity movement of diverse communities worldwide.
